The Phene is a delightful treasure hidden away in a residential neighbourhood in the quaint borough of Chelsea.  Formally known as The Phene Arms, the pub has transformed itself into a diverse venue.  It offers a relaxed and stylish bar for drinks and dinner, a light and airy delicatessen to eat in or take away food and drink, a simple and elegant lounge for hosting events of any kind, and a lovely furnished terrace for enjoying the outdoors.

The recently renovated Phene describes itself as “a townhouse with a  sleek, contemporary style”, and it lives up to this depiction.  Every room is comfortable and classy, a feat achieved by the simple and stylish decor.  And I was pleased to discover that the great presentation extended beyond the physical space.  Each course was meticulously plated to create a visually spectacular dining experience.  And, the crowd was not too shabby looking either!  Everyone was relaxed, happy, and smartly dressed.

“Focused on simple, classic favourites,” The Phene strives to use only the best locally sourced, quality ingredients in their plates.  The well balanced menu offered a range of options from “lighter daytime fare such as fresh, seasonal salads to more substantial dinner options.”  The food served at The Phene is moderately priced, perfectly cooked, wonderfully seasoned, and phenomenally presented.

I dined at The Phene for dinner, and started the meal off with a steamed globe artichoke with salted lemon butter sauce.  The artichoke was pealed back and a ramekin of the delicious butter sauce was placed in the middle, making the dish look like a flower which I happily devoured.  For my main course, I had the pan roasted sea bass with spinach and mushroom risotto, roasted vine tomatoes, and gremolata.  The fish was draped over the risotto beautifully, topped with the tomatoes, and sprinkled with the gremolta.  And to wrap up the meal, I had the apple and blackberry crumble with crème anglaise.  The tartness of fresh fruit was complemented perfectly by the sweetness of the shot glass full of cream.

Every course of the meal was superb!  I can’t wait to return to The Phene to enjoy the great food, relaxed atmosphere, and posh crowd.
